Principle and Characteristics of X-ray Fluorescence Analysis

X-rays are used to bombard the sample, which then emits X-ray fluorescence upon excitation. The X-rays typically eject inner-shell electrons (K and L shells) from the atoms, creating vacancies that are filled by higher-energy outer-shell electrons. The excess energy is released as X-ray fluorescence. The emitted spectral lines contain characteristic features of each element, like fingerprints, and are independent of the chemical state of the atom. The intensity of the radiation is proportional to the concentration of the element in the sample.

 

Coal ash is the solid residue left after the high-temperature combustion of minerals in coal. Its composition is complex, mainly consisting of oxides and salts of elements such as sodium, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, potassium, calcium, titanium, and iron. Coal ash composition analysis is an important aspect of coal quality testing and research.
